White water rafting is high on many people’s list of things to do here in Uganda. With some lots of good rapids and a stunning river with high level its superlative.

There are some very exhilarating sections with space between to lay back and float along taking in the landscape and enjoying the nature, particularly the many species of birds to be found here.

Fish eagles cry from the clear skies overhead, giant monitor lizards bask in the equatorial sunshine and flocks of long-tailed cormorants herd schools of fish into the shallows.

The world’s longest river roars to life as the White Nile minutes after slipping quietly from Lake Victoria. It thunders between heavily forested islands and then leaps wildly into a series of spectacular drops.

The roar of the rapids drifts upstream with the gentle breeze. Wooden canoes laden with excited locals congregate in the calm waters anxious to see our rafts in action.

To the amazement of our audience, we plunge into the maelstrom and ride the mountainous waves downstream. Our rafts explode through huge walls of whitewater and drift through the warm green pools (27°C) in the equatorial sunshine.

This is white water rafting at its very best. The beauty of the Nile in Uganda is nothing short of spectacular and unknown to all but the fortunate few who have had the pleasure of standing on its banks.

‘Here I stood on the brink of the Nile … and nothing could surpass it . John Hanning Speke, 28th July, 1862 on ‘discovering’ the Victorian Source of the great river near where we start our rafting trips.

The multitude of rapids between the beautiful mid-river islands allow us to choose softer options of white water rafting for those not willing to subject themselves to certain capsize of the raft or for long solo swims through the rapids.

Expert guides are professionally trained to cater to the needs of each adventurer who joins them on the river.

One day white water rafting – 31 kms

‘Forward, left-turn, hold on.’ I reach for the rope that traverses the perimeter of the raft and grasp my paddle tightly as the river drops away beneath us.

Seconds after I fill my lungs with a healthy gulp of fresh air, a giant wall of green water is towering above us. The raft buckles as the bow explodes into whitewater and droplets of spray sparkle in the sunshine. Moments later we are under water.

Dressed lightly for a day in the sunshine the slightly cooler waters are a welcome relief. A split second later we emerge ecstatic as the raft summits a giant wave in what has become the Nile’s roller coaster.

Another trough looms ahead and I exhale an enthusiastic whoop before preparing for the next dousing.

Minutes later the raft is rocking gently in the calm pool below the legendary Big Brother rapid, no-one escaped the dunking and it is smiles and disbelief all around.

Some of us turn upstream to watch as the next raft races down the long green tongue of the rapid and accelerates toward the first towering wave. In popular paddle-rafts, each person joins as a member of a team and a professional guide captains the team.

Paddlers are instructed comprehensively on how best to enjoy themselves on the water and on all aspects of safety including the use of safety kayaks which accompany every raft trip on the water.

The highly-trained white water rafting safety kayakers are world class paddlers who adeptly pilot their tiny boats through the mountainous waves of each rapid ahead of the rafts.

When rafts flip upside down or people are washed overboard they are nearby to provide assistance in getting people back to their boats. The trip on the water begins slowly and the first few kilometres give the raft guides an opportunity to train their crews fully on all aspects of Nile rafting.

The young river dances into action at Bujagali Falls as if anxious to race to the thirsty deserts downstream and one major rapid follows swiftly after another for most of the morning.

By the time the rafts drift toward Wakisi island, a wholesome and inviting lunch is waiting eager consumers.

There is nothing quite like a morning on the Nile for whetting one’s appetite. Succulent pineapples, giant avocadoes, crisp bell peppers and tasty carrots are all organically grown in nearby villages.

Fresh bread, roasted ham, salami and juicy tomatoes all combine wonderfully well to satisfy even the most insatiable appetites from a morning of fresh air, wildwater and sunshine. After a leisurely lunch on beautiful Wakisi island, the white water rafting enter Wild waters Reserve which is a private conservation initiative started by Adrift to protect the unique flora and fauna of the mid-stream islands of the Nile.

There is more time between the rough water but the rapids on the Nile become larger and more spectacular. It makes the most spectacular video footage as riders are often thrown in the air before hitting the racing current and being swept downstream to the calm pool below.

I sometimes use the email option to see if some of my friends read my emails or if they delete them without reading them. I do this so I know whether or not to continue emailing them, because if they delete my emails without reading them, then it must mean they aren’t interested in that specific topic (joke emails, for example) or interested in hearing from me period. One of my friends, a guy, reads all of my emails (I send him a few emails a day, short ones, about four). He seems to like me as a buddy & even he seems attracted to me. He has deleted the pictures I’ve sent him, twice, without viewing them. The latest pics were of me water river rafting & he deleted them without viewing them. He doesn’t know I have this Internet option. I’m hurt and I know this c/b babyish, but what does this mean?
This is the second time he deleted my pics without viewing them. He did view the pics I sent him of my nephew a couple of times.
I would think he knew there was an attachment, but you never know. I entitled the email, “Water river rafting trip, 9/08.” He didn’t know I went water river rafting, though. Previous, when I sent him pictures, I entitled the email, “Easter pictures,” I think and he didn’t view those pics either.

Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are those pre-selected vacation sites, or you just won’t go there unless it’s by mistake. Whether you’re headed west on US Interstate 70 leaving Grand Junction, CO or you’re headed east out of Utah, there just isn’t a visible clue to the unique beauty of these two vacation spots. You look out the window at the great western desert, minus the cacti, and your reaction may well be, “How soon can we get out of this… this nothing?”

Often in this wonderful world of variety, the spectacular is just around the next corner or over the next ridge. In this case it’s twenty minutes away from the Crescent Junction Exit (Exit # 179) 70 miles west of Grand Junction, CO and 20 miles east of Green River, UT. Here lies a vast area of rugged yet artistic beauty and much of it is accessible by two-wheeled drive, low-riding automobile. If you’re restricted physically to enjoy the view from your automobile, this is a wonderful country, but the beautiful and challenging trail trips and river expeditions that await the more adventurous are truly inspiring.

You make the call. Luxurious lodging beckons with full-guided tours on land and water, or camping and back packing offer less expensive choices in all directions… It’s all here in Moab, UT.

Native Moabites and National Forest facilities and employees eagerly share their knowledge and recommendations to fit your needs and expectations. Don’t let the hustle and bustle of Moab with a population of 5200 fool you. In 30 minutes you can bask in a remote corner of the great Southwest.

Do consider the following tips related to the time of year that you plan to visit this area.

? During the months of May through September the daytime temperature may exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

? From November through February nighttime temperatures have reached below zero Fahrenheit.

? Be prepared for extreme temperatures. Be sure to check local forecasts and with local tour companies for availability and for how to dress and prepare for the temperature extremes.

? This is an adventure that requires several days to do it justice. Besides driving and hiking Arches National Monument and Canyon Lands National Monument, activities include 4 Wheeling, ATV Riding, Fishing, Golfing, Guides and Outfitters, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Motorcycle Touring, Photography, and River Running.

For the history buff, the area abounds with the color and intrigue of cattle ranching and rustling, Indians, and pioneer settlement for example, the legend behind Dead Horse Point State Park.

Points south of Moab include Bridges National Monument and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, lands with their own aura and eccentric rock formations.

Moab, Utah, offers a wide spectrum of activities and sites for the vacationer. It is a jewel of unique vista and history. It may sit seemingly out n the middle of no-man’s land, but it is the western entrance to Southern Utah’s canyons and monoliths. Whether bathed in summer sun, wearing a mantle of winter snow or drenched in sudden thunderstorms, this land is a must-see, must-do adventure.

If you and your friends and family are planning on spending your next vacation or holiday outdoors, why not do a little white water rafting? This activity is great for groups, and is ideal for people who enjoy being outside or in the water. If the idea sounds interesting, and you’re not quite sure where to start, here are some white water rafting tips for beginners that will help you feel more at ease during your first trip.

First of all, you’ll want to select a white water park or white water river that caters to beginners. This way, you’ll feel comfortable in the raft with your instructor, and you’ll know that you’ll have someone there to give you white water rafting tips every step of the way. If you can’t swim or haven’t gone swimming in a while, you can take what are called class III courses for whitewater rafting, which are safe for everyone, even children.

Kids as young as 6 or 7 can go on most white water park excursions, so you won’t have to worry about not including everyone in your trip (unless you can toddlers or infants in tow). If you want to go on a more intense whitewater rafting trip, you’ll need to enroll in a class IV or class V class, but you have to know how to swim well.

If you have any health conditions, such as asthma or heart problems, you should definitely talk to your doctor about the safety of going whitewater rafting. There are lots of sharp turns and intense twists depending on the course you take, and you should be prepared for this before you and your family book your trip. Pregnant women are advised not to go rafting, but you may be able to do so if you are in the first trimester; however, any time after that may pose a threat to the health of the baby.

Once you’re in your raft, be sure that your life jacket is fastened securely before the raft starts to move. Be sure that you are seating correctly so that the weight is evenly distributed, and keep young children near you at all times. Your raft should be able to fit up to 8 people, so if your group is not quite that large, be sure to sit in the raft evenly so that you don’t tip over.

After your rafting trip, you may want to try other water activities such as kayaking or canoeing, so be sure to schedule other classes at your water park before your trip is over. Enjoy!
