White Water Rafting Scotland
Filed Under Travel | Comments Off
Peter Syme asked:
White water rafting is fun, exciting, dangerous and now Scotland has placed itself firmly on the map as the place to do it. Since the early 1970s white water rafting has become a sport that has grown rapidly year on year. Places such as River Tummel in Scotland are now home to thousands of tourists and experienced rafters alike who take to the water each year.
With white water rafting comes more than just adventure, there is the risk of injury as well. That is why anyone who is new to the sport must understand the risks that are involved every time you enter a raft. The fast-paced nature of the sport means literally anything can happen, and not just falling overboard. Steering in and out of obstacles also means that you run the risk of collisions, so it is imperative that you understand the importance of wearing a life jacket and as well as a safety helmet. It is usually the case that rapids are given a rating between 1-5 for how complicated they are, so remember and start low before working your way up. 1 is the lowest and would be suitable for young children and beginners, whilst a more experienced rafter may be able to take the challenge of a rapid classed as 5.
With the growth of rafting as a recreational activity and a sport, many improvements in the options that are open to people have become available. This means that lazy rafters looking for cheap frills without wasting energy can now look towards motorised rafts, rather than the traditional human-powered raft. This is also a great way for people to settle into the experience of riding a rapid, without the added worry of steering and powering the raft at the same time. It is also worthy of note that many say the motorised element can remove much of the fun associated with the sport.
Scotland and white water rafting now go hand in hand for a number of reasons, not least the great facilities. Scotland is home to highly skilled and qualified instructors in the area of white water rafting, but that is just the start. Places such as Grandtully, Dunkeld and Averfeldy have world class facilities for experienced rafters and beginners alike. Not only that, but Scotland is also home to dam induced rapids that mean rafters do not have to count on conditions to be sure they can have a great days sporting activity.
As Scotland continues to grow as the place to live the white water rafting experience, it is also becoming home to many sporting events in the international arena. This is not only raising the profile of white water rafting within Scotland, but also has a positive impact on the country as a whole. The areas in Scotland where rafting is most prominent are also tranquil and unspoiled, and therefore are suitable for holiday makers who want to enjoy the great sporting opportunities and the quiet country side at the same time.

River Jehlum- the Life Line of Kashmir
Filed Under Exotic Locations | Comments Off
Rosy Vohra asked:
The much revered and the very enchanting river Jehlum is one of the seven rivers collectively referred to as sapta-sandhu. The river finds its mention in the ancient Indian scriptures of the Rig-Veda where is called as Vitasta. The ancient Greeks called the mighty river as Hydaspes after the titan descended god born to Thaumas-the sea god and Elektra-the cloud goddess. Hydaspes was the brother of the goddess of rainbow-Iris and Harpies- the lord of snatching winds. The historical battle between Alexander the Great and King Porus of Jehlum in 326B.C is documented as the Battle of Hydaspes. Mogul Emperor Jahangir was very fond of this river with clear blue waters and called it ‘Bebat’, though its initial course is a bit muddy.
This 772 km long river of which 177 km is covered in India has an aura about it. It is sheltered amidst the huge Himalayas and moves through the beautiful Kashmir valley along its meandering course. In Srinagar alone, seven bridges are built across its width at a number of places to facilitate movement of people, goods and vehicles over it. The charming and enthralling capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is located on either side of the valley benefiting from its rich waters to sooth its land and give life to its people. The fishermen spreading their nets in the early mornings into its wide lap sitting on their shikaras boats, the floating lotus-their deep rooted stems are collected for preparing Kashmiri dish popular as nadu set as balls in rich tomato curry and relished with steamed rice is the normal everyday scene along this Grand River.
The most enchanting sight is the presence of full equipped houseboats on River Jehlum and on the Dal Lake and the equally beautiful Nagin Lake where Kashmiri families actually live. They often rent a part of these floating homes to tourists and guests at reasonable prices. During mornings and afternoons children from families living in houseboat can be seen going and coming back from regular schools. They climb down their houseboats and set on to their journey to school located on the land on the shikaras, vigorously rafted by someone from the family and come back the same way. Interestingly there are markets and small size field beds on River Jehlum and the Dal Lake to cater to the regular needs of the locals living on the water abodes. Tourists love to see this unique arrangement. When tourists pass by through the Dal Lake riding on the shikaras whilst enjoying the scenic beauty of the valley, shop keepers and their agents whisk on their shikaras to display and demonstrate their Kashmiri made products to the tourists.
River Jehlum is the tributary of River Indus. It finds its birth from the womb of a deep spring at Verinag. This is somewhere located in the south-eastern side of Kashmir at the foot of the great Pir Panjal Mountains. It gets widened as it flows in characteristic loops and curves through the heart of Srinagar until it merges with the Wular Lake-the largest freshwater lake of Asia. It then travels along a deep narrow Baramulla gorge before entering the Pakistan part of Punjab. However once it enters the deep Baramulla gorge, the river ceases to be navigable as it forms a deep bed and takes up a rapid flow. It is the most western and largest flowing rivers that enter the plains of Punjab giving life and relief to its heat drenched soil. The impressive river finally sleeps upon its mergence with river Chenab at Trimmu in Jhang in Pakistan. The Chenab then joins Satluj when it is referred to as River Panjnad. At Mithankot the Panjnad finally confluences with River Indus and enters the Arabian Sea.

White Water Rafting - Not for the Faint of Heart

Tyson J Stevenson asked:
White water rafting is an adventure sport in which a raft is used to navigate a river or any water body. It is usually done on rapids or white water to keep up the excitement. A river goes through different gradients and flows from a higher gradient to lower gradient. When the river’s gradient becomes sharp, frothy water is formed consisting of bubbles and aerated water. This has a white appearance hence termed white water. The sport has been popular since the mid 80’s. .
White water rafting is suitable for all age groups as various types of rapids are available for different tastes and experience. Almost anyone with a reasonable health can go for white water rafting. It is a good way to spend a vacation, travel abroad, be among the nature, get the sun and of course get a tan. It is considered a good way to release the stress. The expeditions range from a day to a month. White water rafting is now widely practiced through out the world.
The essential gear required for White water rafting is a raft. The inflatable boat is the most common raft used. It is made up of layers of durable rubber fabrics and independent air chambers. Various sizes are available ranging from 11 ft to 20 ft. White water kayaks are also popular. They are made of plastic or fibre glass. Safety gear, water proof bags & cases, hooks, knifes, ropes and camping equipment are essential. Almost all these are available on hire.
April to October is a good time. For thrill seekers May & June are suitable when the rapids are more turbulent. White water rafting is done throughout the world round the year.
White water is classified into 6 categories depending on the difficulty: • Class I: Smooth water but fast. • Class II: A little bit of rough water with eddies and easy drops • Class III: Whitewater with rapids irregular waves, back eddies. Swimming, self rescue knowledge is must. • Class IV: White water with whirlpools, high irregular waves, for experienced adventurers. • Class V: White water with dangerous obstacles, violent rapids, boiling eddies. Scouting is essential before going on such expeditions • Class VI: Extremely dangerous unexplored rapids. Due to interaction of river and riverbed various features are like strainers, eddies, waves, pillows and holes are formed. The passage of water through large objects, (usually boulders) causes a strainer. Holes are formed when water pours on top of submerged objects that cause the water to flow backwards which rushes over the object. Waves are fronts formed on water surface flowing down. Eddies are swirls or rotating water flow. When large volume of water suddenly comes against an obstruction, the water flows to a certain limit over the obstruction causing a pillow. The popular destinations are South Fork American river, Colorado river, Arkansas river, Salmon river, Merced, Kaweah in US. Rivers in Quebec and British Columbia in Canada. Ganga Yamuna and Teesta rivers in India. There has been concern by environmentalists due to activities of White water rafters like dredging the river bed. However white water rafting also contributes to the local economy.

Boating And White Water Rafting Holidays
Filed Under Travel | Comments Off
Clinton Maxwell asked:
Few can resist the enjoyment and excitement of river rafting. Taking some care and precautions while preparing for a rafting vacation could be what it takes to make it the best vacation ever for your whole family.
Safety is the one most important thing to consider while taking a rafting holiday. Rafting companies have an established set of safety measure that they will follow and teach you about. But when you decide to go rafting by yourself then you have to pay attention to these safety measures.
First and foremost you should have a life jacket for each member of the family and you should insist that they keep it on. The white water currents prove dangerous even for good swimmers and so it is imperative to keep the life jacket on. It could be this personal floatation device that could save a life in a dangerous situation.
Clothes made of fabrics that dry out easily should be worn. You should favor shoes, which are light since heavy shoes are not helpful in case you fall and have to swim.
Check out your equipment thoroughly. This is especially necessary when you are going to be using equipment borrowed from someone who is known to someone whom you know! Make sure that your raft is solid and paddles are in good order. On the other hand, if you are renting from a rafting company, then you need not be overly worried about this aspect.
Make sure that every one in your team is fully aware of what this adventure entails. Being prepared mentally is very important as panic often makes people do foolish things, and could end in a calamity.
Ensure that your life jacket is specially rated fit for rafting. It is also wise to have water proof bags to carry your stuff, for it would be awful to end up with soaking wet gear at the end of a day of rushing down a river. Understanding the specific needs of white water rafting in terms of equipment and attitude is essential.
Food for the boating trip is another important thing to consider. It should be easy to prepare, tasty and also nutritious. Should you run out of ice for your cooler, the riverside is not a place where ice will be readily available, so do not take foodstuff that needs to be refrigerated. After a tired day, no one would have the energy or the patience to indulge in a long cooking session. So take things that you can prepare fast and eat.

Respect the nature and preserve it so others after you can enjoy the same benefits.
Any exercise in the nature is welcome whether it is just a picnic after a brief hiking or whitewater rafting on American rivers; it does not only provide a great work out for the body but also works great in releasing stress accumulated all year long.

Christina asked:
Okay, so we decided where we wanted to go for our honeymoon. We want to go River Rafting, Hiking, and all of those fun adventures near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I want to find packages and deals, but I am not sure there to go or how to start looking. It would be for 7 days (Aug. 17-24) Any suggestions?
We are coming from Chicago, IL.
We want to do nature stuff, go on expeditions with groups, kayaking, etc… I want to find good packages and deals!! I’m excited!

Outdoor Cooking While Rafting and Camping

Kari O’Brien asked:
Cooking outdoors is a very easy task with a little preparation and planning. If you are planning a rafting or camping trip, there are a few things to remember before you head out to the wilderness, and a few things that can turn a great riverside camp meal into a tantalizing, mouthwatering treat.
First, check your cooking equipment and make sure it is clean and well organized before heading outdoors. Include common utensils and equipment like spatula, turner, large serving spoons, knives, forks, spoons, plates, bowls, cups, coffee pot, cooking pots, pans, (preferably cast iron skillet and Dutch oven), lids, and plastic bags. Utensils can be stored separately in plastic Ziploc bags or long, thin plastic containers with lids. Stack cups inside bowls and pots and pans to utilize all areas of space and remember, you can stack upside down too! Once the tools of the trade are collected, be sure that your cook stove is clean and all working parts are present, including propane, regulator, briquettes, matches or lighter. A few other essentials to include in the cook tubs are pot holders or gloves, foil, cutting board, clean dish towels and scrubbers, dish soap, garbage bags, bleach and a flashlight.
Secondly, plan a menu for each meal of each day that you will be cooking outside. It is easiest to plan the menu by days and meals. For example, Day 1: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks; Day 2: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, etc. Once you have your menu planned you can easily make the list of ingredients that go into each meal or snack. Break the list into categories like meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables, dry goods and so on, until you have a complete list of supplies you need to pack. This list can also double as a shopping guide. Perishable items like meats should be frozen ahead of time and packed together in a cooler along with other items that need to be kept cold like milk or cheese. Be sure to pack frozen water bottles, or recycled juice bottles full of frozen water to keep ice chest temperatures cold. It is also a good idea to keep a small thermometer in the cooler so that you know temperatures are appropriate to prevent food spoilage. Crushed ice is added after everything else is packed into the cooler, and it is best to pack drinks in a cooler separate from the perishables cooler.
Now that everything is prepared and organized, a few other pantry items are pertinent to note. Add to the dry goods staples items such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, sugar in a mason jar with screwed down lid, an additional empty pint sized mason jar with lid, vanilla flavoring, other favorite herbs and spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, Pam, or your favorite brand of non stick cooking spray, tea, coffee and hot cocoa. These items can fit into a small storage tub with a lid and labeled as Preferred Pantry! In the cold cooler, be sure to add heavy whipped cream in a mason jar with lid, butter, milk and half and half.
Next comes the cooking. Take the time to organize the camp kitchen. Set up a hand washing station with water, pump soap and clean towel. Unpack tools and utensils so they are easy to reach, yet discretely out of the way. Prepare the garbage/recycle station before you start to cook. If you are using a small grill, set it up and check to make sure it works, and that you have placed it in a well ventilated area. Open coolers as little as possible to keep things cold. As the cooking begins, remember you are working at a slower pace than the stove at home. If using a campfire to cook, smoke will enhance and flavor meats and grilled vegetables with an unbelievably delightful flavor. When food finishes cooking, transfer to a plate and cover with a lid or aluminum foil to retain heat and flavor.
Finally, an impromptu treat of Same Day Cobbler is made possible by the supplies included in the pre-trip preparations. In August, there are many ripe blackberries. Pick a quart or two of the wild berries. Rinse and place the berries into a Dutch oven. Sprinkle with sugar and use about one tablespoon of butter and dot the berries. If berries aren’t available, pack a can or two of peaches. After that, mix up the cobbler topping using the pancake mix you brought along. Add a few tablespoons of sugar to the mix, and mix with milk until t it is the consistency of a drop biscuit. Drop the cobbler dough on top of the berries or peaches. Sprinkle the top with a teaspoon full of sugar, put on the lid and bake in a Dutch Oven until you can see and smell the steam escaping from the top. While the cobbler is baking, fill a mason jar two-thirds full of heavy whipping cream. Add a dash of sugar, a touch of vanilla and ***** the lid on tight. Now it is time for more fun! Pass the jar of whipping cream around the camp fire. As each person shakes it, watch your family and friends make whipped cream! When the Same Day Cobbler has finished cooking, serve with a little whipped cream. Enjoy!
Cooking outdoors can be very enjoyable and delicious. It contributes to the relaxing rhythm of an outdoor adventure and invites others to share in the work, or keep you company while you are cooking. Be sure to clean up, wipe down and store all unused food. Outdoor cooking is an integral element of rafting and camping. It enriches the experience, slows the pace and enhances the flavors of food. Enjoy what comes along and be sure to share the joy of cooking at the camp fire!
