Me and my friends are headed out to w. virginia for a rafting trip, and past rafting experiences remind me how tired I was by the end. What exercises should I work into my regular work-out schedule to help me better prepare? I can’t think of any that simulate a paddling motion.

White water rafting is a brand new form of recreational activity. It is a kind of adventurous water sport utilizing a raft to navigate in a turbulent white water river or in other water bodies having different degrees of rough water. This leisure sport gained its recognition in the year 1970 when it was included in the Munich Olympic Games . But it was first journalized by the Lieutenant John Fremont of the U.S. Army in on the Platte River in 1842.
White water rafting are mostly performed on the wild water of the untamed and turbulent rivers.
Nowadays inflatable boats are used as the rafts which mainly consists of the durable, multi-layered rubberized or vinyl fabrics with several independent air chambers. Their length varies between 3.5 m (11 ft) and 6 m (20 ft), the width between 1.8 m (6 ft) and 2.5 m (8 ft). The pack raft is the most smallest form of raft of length 1.5m and weight as little as 4lbs. There are mainly three types of rafts namely symmetrical raft steered with a paddle at the stern, asymmetrical rudder controlled raft, symmetrical raft with central helm.
Best sight for rafting in India:
White water rafting is still in its infancy in India. Some of the best sight for white water river rafting in India are Rishikesh, Dakpathar and the Ramganga in Corbett National Park because most of the northern rivers flows southwards from the Himalayas. Garhwal region of India through which the pious river Ganges flows, is one of the best sight which offers both professional as well as amateur the thrill of white water rafting. The water of the rivers like Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, Indus , Zanskar and Teesta offers some “raft- worthy” rapids. The river after Devprayag, the meeting point of both Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers is perfect for the first timer and the amateur to learn and enjoy the excitement of rafting a because at this area river offers some fine Grade III rapids and two Grade IV rapids.
The suitable period for white water rafting depends on the adequacy of water volume in the river. September to November and March to May are most appropriate for this thrilling sport because at this time of the year monsoon rains and melting of snows in the mountains enhance the level of water in the rivers. But extra care is must for the novices to avoid any kind of casualty.
Do’s and don’ts for Rafting:
White water rafting can be threat to life if safety measures are not observed properly. Due to both environmental dangers and improper behavior, rafters faces the risk of White water rafting. Both commercial and private trips have seen their share of injuries and fatalities, though private travel has typically been associated with greater risk.
Before signing on for a trip, it is advisable to discuss properly the safety measures with your rafting operator.
Always consider essentials information like the certification of the outfitters, rafts, and raft leaders and the qualifications of the company. Also checkout the river gradient and its rapids before starting your expedition because degree of difficulty depends on the river gradient and its rapids.
Rafting with experienced guides is the safest way to avoid some dangerous features like keeper hydraulics", "strainers" (e.g. fallen trees), dams (especially low-head dams, which tend to produce river-wide keeper hydraulics), undercut rocks, and of course dangerously high waterfalls.
However moving water in safe areas can also creates some risk. Don’t try to stand up on a rocky riverbed amidst of strong river current.
River rafting in some parts of India requires special permission from the authorities. The area near international borders such as Nubra, Sikkim, Lahaul and Spiti.
Always carry ordinary outdoor gear, goggles, antiseptic cream, suns cream lotion, shorts, T-shirts (or other light and quick-dry clothing) and suitable shoes- sneakers or heavy duty rubber sandals. Also carry a wind proof jacket, a light sweater, towels, and a flashlight- and don’t miss out the first aid box and the camera while enjoying this exiting and adventurous sport.

If you really feel ambitious, you might enjoy a ride down the rivers of Honduras. A cheap holiday vacation in Honduras can be extremely adventurous when you plan your trip around the whitewater rafting experience. Imagine the off-season in Honduras finding new uncharted waters with more rapids than you could ever need. You plan a vacation that includes a guided tour or if you are experienced, you might try the waters yourself. There are so many uncharted waters in Honduras just waiting to be discovered. Can you imagine discovering the next best place to do some rapid shooting and sharing it with the natives?
Every year you will find people from everywhere planning a cheap holiday vacation to Honduras to do just that, find some new waters to have the adventure of a lifetime. Many times, rafters start in La Ceiba, which takes you on the tour of a lifetime through a beautiful gorge and some spectacular jungle areas. The Honduras holiday vacation is one of the best presents you could give to yourself. I f plan the trip during a holiday that is also an off-season time, you can find some cheap holiday packages that allows the entire family to go along.
The months of November and December are the best time to visit Honduras because the rainy season is done and the waters are ready to send you on a thrill you will not forget. The challenge of whitewater rafting as the waters rise and fall is incredible. You can look around at many different travel sites on the Internet to find the one that is the best as far as a cheap holiday deal. You will find that many include hotel accommodations, airfare and sometimes the rafting package as well.
You will find that a trip to Honduras is going to be less expensive than a trip to Walt Disney World. You do not have to spend money to enjoy the beautiful scenery while out on the river waters. It is all free and just waiting for you to come and enjoy. Look around and see when you should plan your cheap holiday to Honduras.

Shari Hearn asked:
Did you know that a day at the beach can have a positive effect on one’s emotions? Or that even looking at a relaxing beach scene can have a calming effect? Maybe that’s why many people choose to spend their vacations at the water’s edge, either at the ocean, lake or river.
Where might you want to spend your next “water vacation?”
On an Island
There are so many island destinations around the world with fantastic beaches upon which to relax, as well as great diving, snorkeling and swimming opportunities.
Most people instantly think of the Hawaiian Islands of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. But if you’ve been to Hawaii and want to try something new, how about St. John, the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands? St. John was voted one of the “Top 5 Islands in The Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas,” by Travel + Leisure in 2006, voted one of the “Top 10 Caribbean/Atlantic Islands” by readers of Conde’ Nast Traveler in 2006, and voted “All-Around Destination” by readers of Caribbean Travel & Life in 2005.
The climate on St. John is nothing short of fantastic, ranging from the low 80s during the winter to the low- to mid-nineties in the summer. Lodging options range from pricey resorts on the beach (Caneel Bay Resort) to quite reasonable modest inns with shuttles that take you to the beach. One such modestly-priced inn is The Inn at Tamarind Court. With 20 units, 14 with bathroom, The Inn at Tarmarind Court starts at $110 - $120 for a double room in the off-season, $148 in the winter. You can reach them at 800/221-1637.
Camping on a Beach
Want a great view but don’t want to spend big bucks to get it? Consider camping on the beach, either with a tent or in your RV. As with islands, there are an abundance of great beach campgrounds from which to choose. Here are three you might like:
Henderson Beach State Park, Destin, Florida: Henderson Beach State Park was named one of the “Top 15 Scenic Views” by ReserveAmerica, and is located just east of Destin, Florida on U.S. 98. Tent and RV Campers here will enjoy more than 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline, with sugar-white sand beaches and emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Living Forest Oceanside RV & Campground - Vancouver Island, Canada: RV West Magazine readers have voted Living Forest Oceanside RV & Campground their favorite privately run RV park and campground. Located in Nanaimo, The Living Forest consists of 53 acres of pristine forested land on a peninsula where the Nanaimo River joins the Ocean. Campers here will enjoy water on three sides of this park, and have their choice of sunny sites, river sites, ocean sites or secluded forest sites.
New Brighton State Beach - Capitola, California: New Brighton State Beach is one of the most popular state beaches in California, and chosen as one of the “Most Beautiful Campgrounds” by Frommer’s. Located in the town of Capitola, just south of Santa Cruz, this 93-acre park along the coast of Santa Cruz offers spectacular views of the Monterey Bay. New Brighton State Beach is also popular for its family-oriented campground which sits on the towering bluffs high above the Pacific Ocean.
River Rafting
Whether it’s rafting lazily down a river or an exhilarating whitewater rafting trip, a rafting vacation can be anything you want it to be. If whitewater rafting’s your passion, why not try the Youghiogheny River Gorge which passes through Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania? Not only will you experience some intense whitewater rafting, but you’ll also experience Ohiopyle State Park, which Woodall’s Camping Life includes on their “Top 10 State Parks” list.
Whichever river you choose, do make sure your rafting experience matches the class of the river. If you’ve never engaged in whitewater rafting before, you may want to start out with a lower class, and go in a group with experienced guides.
Lakeside
The great thing about a lake is that there’s usually one within a couple hours where you live, so a great weekend getaway isn’t far away. But, if you’re planning on a longer lakeside vacation with spectacular views why not consider Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and has the distinction of being the only one of the group of Great Lakes to be located entirely in the United States. Lake Michigan is bounded by the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, but it is the beaches in Michigan where most consider the lake to be at its most beautiful. The off-white sand of its beaches are often referred to as “singing sands” because of the distinctive squeaking noise made when someone walks across it. That is due to the sand’s high quartz content.
Whichever water vacation you choose, the point is to go relax and rejuvenate. That means leave your laptop at home and your cell phone off. The world can wait while you enjoy the water and the view.

I am going to Ace Adventure place next month. I read somewhere on their site that guide gratuities are extra, which is fine but I have no idea how much it should be. We are doing 1/2 day rock climbing, horse back riding, and zip lines (Canopy tour), and a full day of white water rafting. Also visiting caverns for a guided wild cavern exploration. Thanks!

Kumar Gagendra asked:
Are you looking for a vacation this year that involves actually doing something instead of just lounging on a beach somewhere? Why not try rafting for a change? Rafting guided tours make for great vacations and you can bring the entire family. Just don’t forget to take lots of pictures because you’re going to want to remember this vacation for a long time. There are many locales you can choose from when deciding to go on a rafting guided tour. You can go to Alaska, Hawaii, or anywhere else they have rafting guided tours. Just get online and do a search and you’ll find very reasonable tours your family will love.
Provides A Skill
The great thing about taking the family on a rafting guided tour is that you are providing them with a skill. The rafting guided tour will teach them how to ride in a raft, how to use the oars, even in rough waters, how to use the safety equipment and what to do in case anything goes wrong. What your family will do with that skill is up to them but, who knows, one of them could become a rafting guided tour instructor.
Choosing Where To Go
You only have to decide where to go on your rafting guided tour. There are many destinations. You might want to go online to see if you can find good deals on travel, hotel, rental cars as well as rafting guided tours. Just imagine taking the entire family on a rafting guided tour instead of the usual boring road trip or other vacation your family typically goes on.
The Ride
When you are given all the instructions by your guide on your rafting guided tour, make sure you pay attention to everything your guide says. It could save someone’s life or it could prevent injuries. Remember, the rapids that you’ll be traveling on are very unpredictable. Of course, it’s not likely that you’ll go over rapids that present a high level of difficulty, as the ride is supposed to be fun not dangerous. But you never know when you’ll feel skilled enough to try one of those high difficulty rides.
This year, take the family on a rafting guided tour and forego the usual vacation destination this year for something a little more exciting. The only thing you’ll need to bring is your family and your appetite for adventure as the guide company will provide everything else you’ll need.
