John Grant asked:

Being the simple water vessel that it is, building a raft out of equally simple materials is no complicated tasks given that one knows the precise steps of constructing one.

The raft has always been one of man’s trustiest vessels in carrying him across bodies of water. Distinguished by its lack of a hull, which is something that most of other boats have, it is perhaps the most basic among all of the water vessels that man has ever made. Even though, the raft has always been one of the most used boat-type for travel over water as its simplicity makes it one of the easiest floating structure to craft since one only needs everyday materials and the essential know-how to construct the raft.

To build one’s own DIY raft, one needs the following materials: a decking, some screws and bolts, a ratchet, some marine foam, some pressure treated lumber with some sawed into sizes of 2 x 10″, and some paper and pencil. For the tools, one needs a circular saw (though table saw will suffice), a drill with a full bit set, a hammer, and a knife.

To start building the raft, one first needs to determine what size and weight one’s raft will be. Building a heavy and large raft will be obviously more durable as far as traversing the waters is concerned but constructing a lightweight and small one will enable one to easily transport the raft from one body of water to another. It is entirely up to one’s preferences as the building procedure will be the same no matter what one opts to construct.

Start the actual construction by cutting some of the 2 x 10″ boards into half and then attaching them to full-length 2 x 10″ boards with a blocking of 2 x 4″. ***** the pieces together with marine or galvanized iron screws coupled with the use of countersinks. After this, attach the side boards to the 2 x 4″ blocking at the raft’s middle and the third positions. With some screws and blocking, fasten four side walls together. Locate the floor joists in the raft and cut them to 7′ in length. 2 x 10″ board sections are then attached from center point to center point all across the box. One can now fasten the floor joists as needed.

The marine foam now can be cut and attached to the spaces present between the joists. Apart from filling in the spaces, foams also add to the buoyancy of the raft, an aspect that is crucial in all floating devices. As with all foaming materials, a hotwire or a knife is the perfect cutting tool.

After the essential parts of the raft have been built, one can now turn to the decking. Like the weight and height of the raft, constructing the decking rests mainly upon one’s preferences in the weight, durability, and practicability aspects of one’s raft.

Building one’s own raft is an easy project to accomplish as long as one has sufficient supply of the necessary materials and the requisite expertise for building simple structures such as the raft.

George Hill asked:

Everyone knows that whitewater rafting trips are very adventurous and exciting. However, they can be even more exciting if you plan to go out with the entire family. Family whitewater rafting trips are a terrific opportunity to spend some good time with the entire family. All of us are too busy in our daily lives to spare time for each other but a family vacation can re-strengthen the same love and trust once again.

Planning a perfect family trip involves meticulous and foolproof planning. However, you should plan in a way that your trip involves an element of adventure and spontaneous exploring. Let Mother Nature be your part time guide so that your trip turns into an unforgettable affair for the entire family.

Decide about the trip in advance and make reservations accordingly. If you have young children or first-time rafters, you should stick with a shorter, less wild trip. If you’re all more experienced you may be ready for a longer trip with more of the wild and crazy rapids. It is important to select adventures which the entire family can enjoy. Talk to your travel agent or any rafting company and detail them about your requirements and expectations.

Shelter is another important consideration. You might be required to bring your own tents and sleeping gear. When traveling with family, things can get bulky. You’ll want to consider purchasing one of the very new and very compact tents that take up less space and weigh very little.

Clothing is the next important thing that should be considered. For hot summer days on the raft, a swimsuit and T-shirt is all you’ll want to wear. Sandals or water shoes can also be worn on the raft. If you are expecting to face cooler weather, bring clothing that will keep you dry.

With proper planning, your rafting trip will be a memorable vacation that your family will remember for a lifetime.

The South & Middle Forks of the American River are the two most admired destinations for white water rafting in California. Their closeness to the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe areas provide quick day trips and overnight escapes for adventurous participants of all ages. In fact, you will find American river rating a very enjoyable and fun family vacation or trip.

You can choose from among half day, one day, two day and three day trips to American River rafting. For those people, who are pressed for time, a half-day adventure trip has also been offered. It includes a morning or an afternoon trip. Both of which cover about 10 miles, and cost just $79 per person on weekdays and $89 on Sundays. Meals are not included.

Since South Fork is in close proximity to many metropolitan areas, it is quite convenient for people to go on rafting trips and then come back home, with plenty of time to relax. You could even raft in the morning and then have time to go hiking in Lake Tahoe in the afternoon. If you’re looking to escape the world for the weekend, a 2-Day option will allow you to enjoy the river on a more leisurely schedule–and you’ll have the opportunity to see both sections of the river.

You will be provided comfortable shuttles, floatation devices, helmets, paddles, and sumptuous dinner as well as lunch. If you stay overnight, you can enjoy a world-class dinner in your camp that will be prepared by your guide. You can also expect evening fireside chats and tent-style camping under the clear skies of the Sierra Nevada Foothills. After rafting, you can even explore the local flora and fauna, thereby teaching your children about nature and its’ rich cultural heritage.

American River rafting is an exciting and thrilling adventure which you can enjoy with your family and friends. So, next time if you are planning to go for a rafting trip, don’t forget to go for American River rafting.

White water rafting is a wonderful experience. You can see beautiful scenery or enjoy a workout traveling over some rapids. The New River white water rafting trip is one of the greatest you can go on. Below are a few things you should consider before taking the rafting trip especially if you have never gone white water rafting before.

The difficulty level of a rafting trip is important especially if you have never gone rafting before. A level five rafting trip is strenuous and takes a great deal of skill. When you are new to river rafting you should start out with a level one to a level three. This will give you plenty of adventure without being too difficult for you. If you have questions it is best to call a guide who does New River white water rafting trips and speak to them about the difficulty levels and which trip might suit you and your family. When considering taking your family on a white water rafting trip you will need to ask at what age your child can go. Some rapids require your child to be a little older while other spots on the river can be for the younger child.

The more experience you have the more fun you can expect. Of course it will take a little work, but going over a level five rapid makes up for the work you might have to put in during some part of the trip. A guide will make certain that you have a life vest and will give you some pointers on how to handle the paddle during certain parts of the New River white water rafting trip.

Once you have established the skill level there are a few other things to consider such as the proper clothing and shoes to wear. Depending on the time of year you choose to go rafting you may need a few extra layers or some sunscreen. As far as shoes go you will want to wear something that will not fall off your feet, as you will need to put your feet in footholds to protect yourself from falling out of the boat.

Taking a trip on the New River white water rafting is an experience you will never forget. Taking simple precautions is important as is choosing the proper difficulty level. Speak with a guide to find the best trip for you. You will also be able to choose the amount of time you go on the trip. There are all day trips or half day trips depending on how long you wish to stay out. If you go on an all day trip you will want to make sure about who will supply the lunch meal. Often all day trips will provide you with a meal.

You may want to go as a group or along to meet new friends, but either way you will want to make sure to plan enough time to enjoy the rapids for days. Since the price is right, you may want to plan for a few different locations in the area.

Whitewater rafting is more than simple rafting. It is much more extreme. But don’t worry, special safety features make whitewater rafting a safer recreational sport. Usually, adventure activities have some degree of risk, and whitewater rafting does as well. However it is one of the safest one of adventure sports. Additionally, outfitters use modern equipment with many safety features and they are trained in safety and first-aid practices.

West Virginia whitewater rafting, known as America’s best whitewater, features the New River and the Gauley River - set in the rugged Appalachian Mountains. These rivers offer plenty of opportunities in addition to rafting: swimming, kayaking, fishing expeditions, etc.

The New River Gorge area is rich in history and culture. It flows North from the mountains of western North Carolina and it reaches the ‘Grand Canyon of the East’, the New River Gorge in West Virginia.

The New River took millions of years to carve this incredible gorge filled with breathtaking scenery, rich history and exciting whitewater rafting. Dependable and consistent year round water flows and exciting rapids like Surprise, Railroad and The Keeney Brother have made New River rafting a whitewater classic.

You can go rafting all the year, but you have to know it means a different challenge in every season. In springtime the river is full of big waves, only those with courage and adrenaline lovers try whitewater rafting in spring. This is class V, which means ‘very challenging’.

Summer is for those who like cozy circumstances and who would like to enjoy scenery, instead of shouting and flinging among waves. It also means warm water, so you can swim and enjoy sunshine, too.

If you go in autumn, you’ll love the colors of the nature. Another advantage of this season is that it is less crowded in autumn. So any time is a great time to experience whitewater rafting.

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner. There are many sections that are suitable for first-time rafters. Start with easy level, and you won’t have any problem. Additionally, anybody can try whitewater rafting, even children, pensioners or coach potatoes. So there is no excuse!

Have you heard about the adventures in Virginia white water rafting? We hear about the historical points in Virginia, but very little about white water rafting. A few great places in the area are the James River and the Flathead River; both have excellent adventures for white water rafting.

Looking around the area, you have areas for the beginner or the experienced white water rafting enthusiasts. Some areas even have somewhat calmer waters for the relaxing float down the river. Virginia white water rafting adventures reach the Blue Ridge Mountains down to the Piedmont region for so many different adventures.

One of the most popular areas remains the James River and people make reservations well ahead of time. If you need to have the ultimate experience, the James River white water rafting trip is for you. The rapids are fast and the waters are fierce, but you will surely experience a great and magnificent adventure. The James River is over seven miles long with some class II and class IV rapids for the adventurous white water rafters to enjoy. Virginia white water rafting adventures need to be experienced by anyone who wants memories of a lifetime.

With the mountains and the gorges, some people often forget about the adventures in white water rafting in the area. If you are looking for some class I or class IV rapids, you might consider the western area or some try the central areas in Virginia. If you are a beginner, you will want to try a class I rapids, which offers the newbie wanting to try the Virginia white water rafting adventure. The rapids for those starting out should be smoother for the beginner than some of the class II rapids that offer a rougher ride.

Virginia white water rafting is for beginners and experts, but the type of rapids may play an important part in your experience. If you want adventure and excitement, you can start out on a class I and work your way up to the thrashing class IV rapids. Once you know what to do and how to do it, white water rafting will be your hobby for a long time. You will spend your free time looking for the ultimate rapids that you have yet to explore. For more info see http://www.whitewaterraftingtripsguide.com/White_Water_Rafting_In_North_Carolina on White Water Rafting In North Carolina.

You will never have an experience like the Virginia white water rafting experience anywhere else but Virginia. If you need some location details, look on the internet for some great information and some awesome pictures. You need to know some safety guidelines and what gear you will need for the rapids before you go on your adventure.

Although the inflatable kayaks are great, there is also the hard shell kayak that people use for white water rafting as well. Some people use a raft to float down the river towards the rushing rapids and this type of river raft requires a great deal of experience before trying. You can always have fun with white water rafting boats no matter which one you choose to experience your voyage in down the river.

White water rafting is an adventure sport in which a raft is used to navigate a river or any water body. It is usually done on rapids or white water to keep up the excitement. A river goes through different gradients and flows from a higher gradient to lower gradient. When the river’s gradient becomes sharp, frothy water is formed consisting of bubbles and aerated water. This has a white appearance hence termed white water. The sport has been popular since the mid 80’s. .

White water rafting is suitable for all age groups as various types of rapids are available for different tastes and experience. Almost anyone with a reasonable health can go for white water rafting. Swimming, self rescue knowledge is must. • Class IV: White water with whirlpools, high irregular waves, for experienced adventurers. • Class V: White water with dangerous obstacles, violent rapids, boiling eddies. Scouting is essential before going on such expeditions • Class VI: Extremely dangerous unexplored rapids. Due to interaction of river and riverbed various features are like strainers, eddies, waves, pillows and holes are formed. The passage of water through large objects, (usually boulders) causes a strainer. Holes are formed when water pours on top of submerged objects that cause the water to flow backwards which rushes over the object. Waves are fronts formed on water surface flowing down. Eddies are swirls or rotating water flow. When large volume of water suddenly comes against an obstruction, the water flows to a certain limit over the obstruction causing a pillow. The popular destinations are South Fork American river, Colorado river, Arkansas river, Salmon river, Merced, Kaweah in US. Rivers in Quebec and British Columbia in Canada. Ganga Yamuna and Teesta rivers in India. There has been concern by environmentalists due to activities of White water rafters like dredging the river bed.
